France's National Day (also known as Bastille Day) is a French holiday celebrated on July 14th. It is a celebration and commemoration of the Storming of the Bastille (a famous medieval prison in Paris) on July 14th 1789, which, in combination with other affronts against the royal family, marked the beginning of the French Revolution. Because of this historic event, the long-standing monarchy in France was eventually overthrown and replaced with a republican form of government.
